It focuses solely on Jean Des Esseintes – the ultimate dandy – and his seclusion from the outside world, loathing anything that has to do with the common, the hoi polloi and indulging himself in intellectual and aesthetic pleasures – creating extravagant perfumes, furnishing his house choosing the right colours for the walls takes him a few pagessetting gems into the shell of a living tortoise, planning a garden of poisonous exotic plants or arranging books in his library his favourite painters and writers take tens of other pages.
For those who deem it a masterpiece, that’s understandable, for those who think it’s nothing more than nonsense, I could agree. And yet, the book’s style does manage to draw you into this character’s interiority, precisely through this exhaustiveness that borders on tedium. What’s interesting about that is that by taking a sympathetic but critical view of des Essientes we can see a precursor for a lot of the movements in 20th Century arts – Warhol, Bowie, etc.
